Thankful that this respectful memorial was built for us to cope, revit service with one another and to give insight to those entering the service.
Overwhelmed before even getting close but after a couple more visits over the years I have found more peace.
A fine example for a young firefighter to follow at the time and a moment that changed both of our lives forever.
Under normal weather circumstances, the events are open to the public. Everyone however must pass through a security checkpoint.
Memorial is on FEMA's National Emergency Training Center (federal facility), but visitors are able to see the memorial after getting a pass at gate if available that day. Highly recommend visiting the campus and the three memorials. If you're in the fire service, you must apply to attend the National Forest Academy - top notch instructors providing world class training.
Absolutely overwhelming..... all the names from all the years. I tried to take a picture of them all. My only complaint is because of where it is, there is no access to public restrooms.
Each year the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation presents a massive memorial service, including candlelight vigil the evening before the main service. Hundreds of surviving family members of the brave fallen men and women attend these services; accompanied and attended by thousands of fire service honor guard, pipe and drum musicians, fire-rescue personnel, friends and family. This event is truly inspiring.
Located at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland, this impressive memorial records the names and service locations of firefighters who have paid the ultimate price to protect and serve other people and property. An emotional journey is in store for anyone involved in, or related to someone in fire-rescue service.
Thank you Sammie Waddell.
The first visit was tough.
Every firefighter needs to go at least once during your career. Great people, good classes and a true sense of brotherhood...
